I live in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, outside of Philadelphia with my family. My wife Margie, is the nurse manager for an outpatient surgery center. Our son Alex is a high school sophomore and Ben is a senior preparing for college.
As a teenager, I got started on my career path as a volunteer first aid & CPR instructor for the American Red Cross. I've been a registered nurse since 1982 and have worked in emergency departments, ICU/CCUs & in prehospital care (EMS). Since 1997, I've specialized in Nursing Informatics & currently work for Siemens Medical Solutions as an Implementation Consultant. My primary work now is helping other healthcare professionals reach the benefits of a computerized medical record; including clerical order entry, computerized provider order entry (CPOE), and electronic documentation for all disciplines and caregivers.
I am also a recreational cyclist. Over the past 10-12 years I've ridden in many sponsored events benefiting local bike clubs and the local art museum, as well as organizations like the American Cancer Society and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
I discovered Ride for World Health after a family friend, Marianne Power, was a national team rider in 2008. I was immediately interested and energized and wanted to participate. I thought, "Hey, this is great cause. I'm a nurse. I ride. I want to do this." I am thankful to my family for their support and encouragement. I also am appreciative of my employer, Siemens, for allowing me to manage my schedule and affording me the time to participate in this cross country bike trip.
I'm looking forward to meeting people across the country and having the opportunity to speak about the issues facing healthcare today. I am also looking forward to the ride, the challenge, the teamwork and camaraderie. |
